FOR CLARIFICATION OF THE GOSPEL: In Christ Are We Covered By The Blood? NO.
By Apostle Edward Freedom | Lifeboat Rescuing Church of
Christ (LRCC)
There is a popular song that says "I am covered by the
blood." It sounds spiritual, but it is Old Testament theology in New
Testament mouths.
In the Old Testament, people and things were COVERED by the blood. In Christ, we are not covered — we are WASHED, CLEANSED, JUSTIFIED AND MADE NEW by the blood.
This is not semantics. This is the difference between
atonement and redemption.
1. IN THE OLD
TESTAMENT: THE BLOOD COVERED SIN
The Hebrew word for atonement is KAPHAR, which means to
cover.
When the blood of bulls and goats was sprinkled on the mercy
seat, it did not take away sin — it covered sin for one year, so God would not
look upon it.
"For the life of
the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an
atonement for your souls." — Leviticus 17:11[covering]
The Ark, the Mercy
Seat, the people, the tabernacle — all were covered by blood. (Exodus 24:8,
Leviticus 16:14-16)
The sin was still there, underneath the covering. That's why
they had to offer blood again and again. Covering is concealment, not
cleansing.
2. IN CHRIST: WE ARE
NOT COVERED, WE ARE WASHED
The blood of Jesus did not come to cover us like a blanket
hiding dirt. It came to wash us until the dirt is gone forever!
We are not covered. We are cleansed.
"Unto him that
loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood" — Revelation 1:5
Not covered in our sins — washed from our sins!
"But if we walk
in the light... the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
— 1 John 1:7
d
"How much more
shall the blood of Christ... purge your conscience from dead works to serve the
living God?" — Hebrews 9:14
In the Old Testament, sin was covered. In the New Testament,
sin is taken away. (John 1:29, Hebrews 10:4)
3. THE DIFFERENCE IS
PROFOUND
COVERED means: Sin is still there, but God chooses not to
see it. You are still a sinner under the blood. You are still guilty, just
hidden.
WASHED means: Sin is gone. Removed. Remitted. You are no
longer a sinner trying to be covered. You are a new creation made righteous.
"Therefore if
any man be IN CHRIST, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold,
all things are become new." — 2 Corinthians 5:17
We are not sinners covered by blood. We are saints washed by
blood.
We are not under the blood like chickens hiding under a hen.
We are IN the blood, IN Christ, IN righteousness.
4. SO WHAT DOES THE
BLOOD DO FOR US NOW?
If we are not "covered," what are we?
a) We are WASHED and CLEANSED - Revelation 1:5, 1 John 1:7
b) We are JUSTIFIED (declared not guilty) - Romans 5:9
"Being now justified by his blood"
c) We are REDEEMED (bought back) - Ephesians 1:7 "In
whom we have redemption through his blood"
d) We are SANCTIFIED (made holy) - Hebrews 13:12
e) We have PEACE and ACCESS - Colossians 1:20, Ephesians
2:13 "Made nigh by the blood"
Don't pray: "Lord, cover me with your blood" like
an Old Testament Jew.
Pray: "Thank you Father, that by the blood of Jesus, I
am washed, I am cleansed, I am righteous, I am redeemed, I am a new creation IN
CHRIST."
Stop living under a covering that hides you. Start living in
the cleansing that made you new.
You are not just covered. You are clean.
