Topic: Under Grace, You Don’t Reap What You Sowed — But What God Sowed

Anchor Scriptures:  

Galatians 6:7-9, Romans 8:1, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ephesians 2:8-10

 1. The Law of Sowing and Reaping Under the Law

Under the law, the principle was clear: “You reap what you sow.”  

Galatians 6:7 “God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.”

That was justice. If you sowed sin, you reaped death. If you sowed disobedience, you reaped judgment.  

The law had no mercy clause. It demanded perfection and punished every seed of the flesh.

That’s why under the law, men lived in fear. Because every mistake had a harvest attached to it.

2. The Cross Changed the Seed

But then Jesus came. And on the cross, He sowed something different.

He sowed:

- Righteousness when we were guilty - 2 Cor 5:21

- Life when we deserved death - Romans 6:23 

- Grace when we deserved judgment - Ephesians 2:4-5

- Sonship when we were strangers - Romans 8:15

Isaiah 53:10 calls it “the seed He sowed through the travail of His soul.”  

That seed was His blood, His obedience, His resurrection.

So the question changed. It’s no longer: “What did you sow?”  

The question is now: “What did Christ sow for you?”

 3. Under Grace, You Reap What God Sowed

Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Under grace:

1. Your past seeds don’t define your harvest.  

   David sowed adultery and murder, but God sowed forgiveness and restoration. He became a man after God’s heart.

   Peter sowed denial, but God sowed reinstatement. He preached at Pentecost.

2. Your failures don’t cancel God’s promise.  

   You may have sown fear, addiction, division, or bitterness. But God has already sown redemption, healing, unity, and a new nature in Christ.

3. You reap by union, not by performance.  

   John 15:5 “Apart from me you can do nothing.”  

   The branch doesn’t struggle to produce fruit. It just abides, and the Vine’s life flows through it. That’s grace.

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.”  

God already sowed the good works. Your job is to walk in them.

 4. But Does Grace Cancel Responsibility?

No. Grace teaches us. Titus 2:11-12 “For the grace of God has appeared... training us to renounce ungodliness.”

We still sow — but now we sow to the Spirit, not to get God’s love, but because we already have it. Galatians 6:8  

The motive changed. It’s no longer fear. It’s gratitude.

 5. The Gospel Application

Brothers, hear this: 

You are not waking up to pay for yesterday’s mistakes today.  

The bill was paid at Calvary.  

You are not harvesting shame, rejection, or curses.  

You are harvesting what God sowed: mercy, favor, new beginnings, and the righteousness of Christ.

That doesn’t mean be careless. It means be confident.  

Run to God, not from God, when you fail. Because under grace, your harvest is tied to Jesus’ seed, not your soil.

Closing Charge:

Stop counting your bad seeds. Start looking at God’s good Seed — Jesus.  

What He sowed in His death and resurrection is what is growing in your life right now: forgiveness, peace, purpose, and glory.

“So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.” - Romans 9:16

Prayer:  

Father, thank You that under grace I don’t reap what I sowed. I reap what Jesus sowed. Help me to walk in the new life You already planted in me. Amen.
